Many individuals express a desire for a more youthful appearance. A younger and smoother face can be achieved by improving the eyelids, by face-lifting procedures and by laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing works best for fine lines, sun damage, and skin irregularity. Laser resurfacing involves peeling away the aged superficial layers of skin, revealing a smooth inner layer. Many patients choose to laser resurface just the eye area or lip area. While the laser works beautifully on many fines lines, only a facelift will correct a sagging neck, jowls and severely loose facial skin.

In the younger individual, the face is firm and smooth due to fatty tissue directly beneath the skin. The tissue, which fills out the contours of the face, gives it an even, rounded appearance. As an individual ages, the skin begins to sag and fit more loosely. Skin folds become more prominent, particularly around the chin, on the jaw line and on the neck.

A facelift will tighten loose skin as well as re-support the internal fat and muscles which sag with time. It can also tighten the loose neck, eliminate neck fat and correct the bands which are seen in an aging neck. A facelift addresses the lower two-thirds of the face while eyelid surgery and browlift address the eyes and forehead. Many times correction of droopy eyelids or forehead can dramatically change the appearance from sad, tired and wrinkled to a younger and rested look. Lower eyelids can be addressed by removing fat pads or bags through incisions inside of the eyelid or along the eyelid margin under the eyelashes which also allows the removal of excess skin.
