At Buckhead Plastic Surgery, Atlanta
We use our mouths every day for eating, speaking and often kissing. Some individuals may feel their lips are too thin or small and desire a cosmetic improvement. Dr. Alan N. Larsen performs a variety of procedures for lip augmentation to create more youthful-looking, more sensuous, fuller lips.
Deciding if Lip Augmentation is Right For You
Patients often choose lip augmentation when they feel their lips are:
- thin or small
- drooping or lacking in fullness
- wrinkled or aged in appearance
To undergo lip augmentation, you should be a healthy non-smoker and not exhibit any ailments of the mouth such as cold sores, skin eruptions or dental abscesses. If you have any of these conditions, they must be cleared up before lip augmentation can be safely performed.
How It's Done
Plastic surgeons offer several different methods for lip augmentation. The least expensive method of lip enhancement is hyaluronic acid (such as Juvéderm or Restylane) which can be injected into the lips. This creates a fuller appearance without surgery. Collagen fillers have also been successfully used for lip augmentation. Although these products are effective, the results gradually fade away over time.
Another option involves placing soft threads of material into the lip for a subtle but permanent enhancement. New fabrics made of the elastic layer of human skin can be placed in the lip for a full, soft, natural appearing lip enhancement which appears to be permanent.
Still another method of enhancement uses Isolagen—a new technique that uses your own cells which make your own collagen. Fat grafting can also be used, especially if you are having surgery (such as liposuction) in other areas where fatty tissues can be harvested.
After lip augmentation, you may experience some swelling or redness. While swelling should dissipate within a day from injection-based treatments, it may linger somewhat longer with an implant. You will need to minimize the movement of your lips for a short time after your procedure. If you have had a lip implant, Dr. Larsen will provide specific oral hygiene instructions to follow during recovery.
The beautiful results of your lip augmentation with injection can last three to six months, while a lip implant can last for years when cared for as directed. If you wish to maintain the injection benefits of your lip augmentation, you can return to Dr. Larsen for follow-up treatments.
- Recovery time: one day
